New to Texas TAK? Three steps, about ten minutes.

Quick start

Texas TAK is a shared map, messaging and voice system. Most people need two things: ATAK on their phone and WebTAK on a computer.

  1. Set your call signHow others see you.
  2. Enroll your phoneOne QR code in ATAK. Voice comes with it.
  3. Open WebTAKThe same map on a computer.

Your profile

How you appear and how you sign in.

Your call sign

How others see you: on the map in ATAK, in WebTAK (with -web added) and in voice. It must be unique; most people use their first and last name.

Set or change your call sign.

Phones you enroll after a change start with the new call sign. On a phone that's already enrolled, change it in ATAK: Settings, then Callsign.

Signing in

Sign in with Google, a Microsoft account, or a code sent to your email: there is no Texas TAK password.

Use the same choice every time. A different one creates a second account, which an organizer has to approve again.

Devices

Phones, tablets and computers on Texas TAK.

Enroll a phone or tablet

  1. Install ATAK from the Play Store.
  2. On a computer, open this portal and choose Enroll a device. A QR code appears.
  3. Point your phone's camera at the code and open the link in ATAK.
  4. Tap OK when ATAK asks to enroll with Texas TAK.
  5. Wait for the check mark on the enrollment page.

Each code works once, for one device, and expires after 10 minutes. On the phone itself, the enrollment page has an Open in ATAK button instead.

WebTAK on a computer

Open WebTAK in any modern browser and sign in with the same account. You see the same map, chat and teams as on your phone, as your call sign-web.

Nothing to install.

Lost or stolen device

Phone: tell an organizer right away. They can turn off your account, which removes your groups and voice on every device. The phone itself can't be fully cut off yet: it can still connect, without your groups, until its certificate expires.

Voice app: remove it on the Voice page; it is disconnected within a minute.

Voice

Talking on Texas TAK.

Voice on your phone

Comes with enrollment. ATAK offers the TAK-XVoice plugin as an update; install it and open it from ATAK's plugins.

It signs in with your phone's enrollment: nothing to link, no code to type.

Voice on a tablet or computer

Optional: a second voice device, for example a tablet in one channel while your phone is in another. Use Mumla on Android or Mumble on Windows or Mac.

  1. Open the Voice page and choose Link a new Mumble app.
  2. Add the server shown on that page in your app, and connect.
  3. Type the one-time code when the app asks for a password.

Managing your voice apps

Up to 3 apps can be linked. On the Voice page:

  • Change an app's callsign gives one app its own name in voice.
  • Re-link moves an app to a new device. The old one stops working the moment the new code is used.
  • Remove one app, or Remove all, disconnects them within a minute.

Access & troubleshooting

Approval, and what to do when something stops working.

Access and approval

New accounts are approved by an organizer. Access usually follows an event: it can start a few days before and end after it.

Something stopped working

  1. Sign out of this portal and sign back in. That picks up any change to your access.
  2. If a page says the server is waking up, wait a minute and try again.
  3. Still stuck? Ask an organizer, and say what you tried.
